Sherborne Developmental Movement

“I have seen and experienced first hand the benefit of Sherborne Developmental Movement; it builds confidence, relationships and develops movement skills. It allows the dancers to engage with themselves, others and with movement itself. In being supported by another moving body allows freedom, choice and the opportunity to move” Alexis Haines – Sherborne Developmental, Movement Practitioner

Coventry Performing Arts is proud to be able to offer Sherborne Developmental Movement (SDM) led by experience dance staff qualified with Level One Sherborne Movement Training. The Sherborne Developmental Movement approach has been developed to enable children and young people, with and without physical disabilities, to experience movement in a safe and supported way. It has been found that Sherborne Developmental Movement can be particularly beneficial to children with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), children with physical disabilities and children who are emotionally and behaviourally challenging the hearing and visually impaired. The Sherborne approach is also highly suitable and engaging for Early Years children and their families or carers.

The Sherborne approach underlines the possibilities of increasing a child’s awareness of their own body and aims to develop connections with others in the class. Through this work participants begin to become aware of what they can do with their bodies and the journey to unlocking the possibilities that movement can present to them.
